The Story Behind: "My Faith has found a resting place" hymn
THE STORY THAT INSPIRED THE HYMN: MY FAITH HAS FOUND A RESTING PLACE
During her recovery, she turned to writing poetry and hymns, finding in this creative outlet a way to continue serving God despite her physical limitations.
Her suffering deepened her spiritual life, and she often wrote from a place of personal experience and reflection. She contributed to Sunday School literature and hymnals, often under the name Lidie H. Edmunds.
Among her many works, one hymn stood out for its confident tone and theological clarity: “My Faith Has Found a Resting Place.”
Though she lived in an era when religious traditions and doctrinal debates were widespread, Eliza’s hymn cut through the noise with a simple yet powerful truth: faith in Jesus Christ alone is sufficient for salvation. She didn’t need theological arguments or human authority to validate her belief—it was enough for her that Christ had died and risen.
The tune most commonly used today was adapted by William J. Kirkpatrick, who also lived in Philadelphia and worked on many hymns. The original melody came from a composer named AndrĂ© Ernest Modeste GrĂ©try, though Kirkpatrick reworked it to match the tone of Eliza’s words.
Over time, this hymn has become a favorite in evangelical hymnals because of its clear, strong message: assurance in Jesus brings rest to the soul. Through personal suffering and spiritual depth, Eliza Hewitt gave the church a hymn that continues to echo her unwavering confidence in Christ.
